Organic compounds shall replace the still dominating metal-containing active materials in primary and secondary batteries to allow an increased safety and an improved environmental impact as well as also the construction of very thin and mechanically flexible devices.
The article “High-Power-Density Organic Radical Batteries“, which was published recently as a chapter of the scientific book “Electrochemical Energy Storage - Next Generation Battery Concepts” within the book series “Topics in Current Chemistry Collections”, presents the successful application of an important class of such organic compounds, stable organic radicals, as active materials in batteries.
