Despite steady progress in regenerative medicine, treatment of major tissue damage caused by disease or surgery still poses a challenge. The research field of tissue engineering (TE) deals with novel materials that support the healing process. Among many different tissue engineering strategies, cell-based tissue engineering, e.g. by encapsulating cells in 3D polymer scaffolds, has become increasingly important in recent years.

The production of such three-dimensional structures with artificial polymers to form so-called hydrogels offers the possibility to model the complex and transformable environment of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and to cultivate different cell types in them. In our publication titled "Microfabrication of 3D-Hydrogels via two-photon polymerization of poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diacrylates", we show for the first time the production of 3D structures by 2-photon polymerization based on poly(2-ethyloxazoline). A water-soluble photoinitiator was developed for this purpose.
