Self-healing materials are able to heal mechanical damage and in this way the original properties can be restored. In the future, these materials can enable a more sustainable use of materials, corrosion can be avoided or reduced and routine maintenance and replacement intervals can be extended.
In our publication we present a new self-healing polymer based on zwitterions in the side chains of the polymers. These zwitterions, which are both positively and negatively charged, lead to the formation of supramolecular networks. This is the basis for self-healing ability. In addition to these new materials, a new method for analyzing self-healing was also shown for the first time. 3D profiles of the cracks are recorded, thus enabling precise tracking and quantification of self-healing.
