Whether as sensitizers in solar cells, emitters in light-emitting diodes, as active ingredients or in materials research and catalysis – so-called terpyridines (tpy) form stable complexes with transition metal ions, which can be used in many different ways. In a review article recently published in the journal "ChemCatChem", Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert and Dr. Andreas Winter presented the current developments in the field of catalysis by terpyridine complexes and discussed this critically in comparison to other systems.

Besides the mediation of organic reactions, research is currently focusing on applications in the field of energy conversion - for example in the field of water splitting, i.e. the production of hydrogen or oxygen, and CO2 reduction by converting this greenhouse gas into chemically usable substances. The complete article, which also presents photo- and electrochemical processes of the above mentioned applications, can be found hereExternal link.
